Samsung Galaxy A71 5G with Exynos 980 SoC in works

A new report this week talks about the Galaxy A71 5G, which may launch in China soon. While the company is already planning to launch the W20 5G foldable phone, the Galaxy A71 will be Samsung’s affordable 5G phone that could help drive sales in China where the company is currently struggling against the competition.

Source reports that Samsung is looking to grab a good piece of China’s 5G market. The company will launch the W20 5G later this month, which will be a variant of the Galaxy Fold for the Chinese market. This means the W20 5G will be an ultra-premium 5G smartphone, but Samsung is also looking to offer an affordable 5G phone to attract a wider audience. This will likely be the Galaxy A71 5G.

The report claims that a Galaxy device with model number SM-A7160 and 128GB of storage is in the works. Based on Samsung’s typical model numbering of its 5G phones, it is believed that the SM-A7160 model is the Galaxy A71 5G for China, while the global variant will have the model number SM-A716B.

Assuming the Galaxy A71 5G will be a mid-range smartphone, it seems highly likely that Samsung will be using the Exynos 980 chipset with an integrated 5G modem. Samsung announced the Exynos 980 in September as the company’s first mobile processor with an integrated 5G modem. Based on an 8nm FinFET process, the Exynos 980 SoC is expected to power mid-range phones with an aim to make 5G more accessible to a wider audience.
